San Sebastian Outdoor Market
Friday Mornings opens at 7am
San Sebastian in the Porta del Sol is home to Puerto Rico’s largest bazaar with over 350 shops. The market is open only on Fridays and offers fresh produce and everything that is available to be sold in an outdoor market.
The typical course of the day is early morning (4am) is when the serious wholesale traders between the farmers and their clients begins with live stock sales and auction.
Once the auctions are complete (maybe around 7am or 8am), the vendors start setting up their tables. followed by setting up the stalls which leads to business between the local shoppers who arrive each week for the staples. By early afternoon the stalls clear somewhat and the casual shoppers and sightseers are strolling through the marketplace tasting homemade jams, jellies and admiring the crafts from the artisans, By evening the food stands are hopping and socializing is the main event.
Items on display are an eclectic mix of fresh local fruit and vegetables. The unique pepino (a long tasty fruit) is a home grown specialty found growing right here in the Porta del Sol. Orchid growers are always in attendance with their delicate blooms. Herbalists and home grown honey farmers will have stands as will toy makers.
Several years ago the bazaar was updated with a renovation that led to a concrete cover and very nice area for the market. Lots of parking and an enjoyable experience for all who make the trip out to San Sebastian a visit to the bazaar will be an experience you won’t want to miss if you happen to be visiting the Porta del Sol.
